We are instructed by God in His Word to watch, pray and be sober so that the day of the Lord doesn’t overtake us as a “thief in the night” – I Thessalonians 5: 2-8. The meaning of the word “watch” from the older Greek translation of the Bible is to ‘be alert and cautious’. The meaning of the word “sober” is to ‘be temperate, calm and careful’. When we combine these two things with prayer, we won’t be surprised by anything that the world throws at us and we will be prepared to deal with anything.
He doesn’t want us to be surprised and stolen from like those who are asleep in their minds as to what is going on around them. There are even many Christians that are asleep spiritually these days. They are going to be quite surprised at how bad things may get. When someone is surprised, they tend to respond by doing foolish things that expose them to further risk.
We, as Christians, will NOT go through the Day of Wrath even if we are asleep in our minds. These verses and their context are the proof of this truth – Thessalonians 5: 9, Romans 5: 9 and I Thessalonians 1: 10. We do have a responsibility before God, though, to be prepared and aware of dangers.
In the context of I Thessalonians 5: 9 we are told to “comfort yourselves together” because of this truth that we will not have to go through this terrible time on earth. What “comfort” would there be to us, if we knew that we were also doomed to go through this period of time?
We should be concerned enough about what we see and hear that we at least tell our friends and family. Even if they don’t believe us, we at least have given them a chance to avoid calamity. That is the loving thing to do and that is all that God expects us to do. This is not an effort by us to motivate anyone by fear. In fact, it is just the opposite of this.
A Day is Coming…
The Bible is clear about the fact that everyone will go through some tribulation. There is a BIG difference, however, between tribulation and the Day of Tribulation. The Day of Tribulation is The Day of Wrath. When this Day of Wrath is come, no one will be able to stand against it or prevent its destruction of everything that is evil – Revelation 6: 17.
Any Christian that thinks that Jesus Christ will come back to rescue them before things get really bad are ignorant of history and are asleep spiritually. Christians were killed during the German holocaust and other bad times dating after the ascension of Christ. Just before Jesus Christ comes back, the Bible says that things will get a lot worse – Luke 21: 1-28. God does not want us to be affected in a bad way during these times.
Before Christ Comes Back, Global Persecution of Christians Will Escalate
If anyone has been paying attention to what is REALLY going on these days, they would know that many of the indications from the verses above are now beginning to increase substantially. Does this mean that we should all freak out? The answer to this question is clearly – NO! However, we should be taking notice and taking action so that we aren’t personally affected in a more traumatic way.
Watch this video below to see what the “lamestream” media is not reporting about the increasing persecution of Christians worldwide.
We Don’t Know When This Day Will Come
God purposely keeps some things secret to Himself. There are some very good reasons for this too. Did you know that the devil would have never crucified Jesus if he had known about one of God’s secrets in particular? [See what this one Big Secret was in Ephesians 3: 3-6, in Romans 16: 25-26 and in Colossians 1: 26-27] The devil knows that his end is coming, but he still wants to wreak havoc upon those that believe in anything that is good about God – John 10: 10-18, I Peter 5: 8-9.
Our main responsibility before God is to keep a good watch over what is going on around us so that we can be in a safe position to defend ourselves against the wiles of the devil – Ephesians 6: 11-20. We must watch in order to protect ourselves as well as those who are close to us. We don’t know the exact time when he will return to gather us together before the Day of Wrath comes – I Thessalonians 5: 1-11, Matthew 24: 42, Matthew 25: 13 and Mark 13: 35.
How Should We Watch?
The best advice that I can give anyone is to be aware of what is happening on a global scale first. Then we should watch what is going on around us personally. Many of the bad things that happen on a larger scale worldwide eventually have a tendency to affect us locally.
Mainstream news is NOT the best source for your global news. You should find sources that are not funded by government or large corporations and that are not connected to any government in any way. There is very little non-biased news on television these days. You should find a good alternative news source on the Internet if you can.
Many biblical teachers will tell us that we will all have to go through the events recorded in the book of Revelation. This is absolutely NOT true! They are guilty of privately interpreting the Word of God. God warns us to not do this in II Peter.
II Peter 1: 20 – Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
There are no contradictions in the perfect Word of God as it was originally given. It is like a diamond that can’t be broken. It is as pure as pure can be. It says this in Proverbs 30: 5 and Psalm 12: 6.
The book of Revelation is for our learning, but it is addressed to the seven churches that were composed of Jews in order to warn them about what was to come. They had not accepted the truth that the true Messiah had already come and that the Great Mystery had been revealed.
The entire book of Revelation, including chapters 1-3, is deeply rooted in Old Testament prophecy which is based upon the Jewish law of the ten commandments. This does NOT mean that Christians should just lie down and get beaten to death by the devil while we wait for Jesus Christ to come back.
We have a greater law now than what the Jews had in the ten commandments. It is the law of love which was introduced by Jesus Christ to take the place of the original ten commandments. Now, as Christians, we are committed to love God with everything we’ve got. We are also committed to love our neighbors as we would ourselves.
We now have a responsibility before God to keep a watch over ourselves as well as our neighbors and to help others to overcome evil in their lives. Let us all faithfully keep watch over what is going on around us, and warn each other, so that God’s love can continue to prevail in these times that we are living in.
