Almost 50 Million People Receive Food Stamps Today Compared To 17 Million in 2000

If the U.S. economy is not collapsing, then why has the number of people on food stamps grown from 17 million in the year 2000 to almost 50 million today? In fact, the food stamps program has quadrupled within the last ten years. The government has paid out an alarming 71.8 billion dollars on the food stamp program in 2011 alone! The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which heads the food stamps program has no restriction on how long a person can receive food stamps.

Welfare has now grown to be the government’s biggest yearly expense component. This total actually excludes the combined yearly outlay for Social Security and Medicare. There has been more than a thirty percent rise in welfare expenditures since the beginning of the existing presidency.

There is nothing wrong with people using federal food stamps to assist them through a temporary, short-term crisis. In this country today, however, there are even generations of voters who live on food stamps as well as other welfare plans. The primary objective of this program really should be to help a greater proportion of people to attain jobs and become more financially self-reliant. Our current welfare programs basically impede personal development in life and weaken families by instilling an attitude of reliance on government hand-outs.

Who They Are For

The USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, is funded to be able to reduce hunger by helping poor families to sustain a basic amount of nutrition for family members. There are actually historic numbers of people in our nation on food stamps now because there are record numbers of people living in poverty. These historical records started out in 1959, by the way.

The USDA states that SNAP benefits are only to be given to U.S. citizens or other lawful residents. An estimated eleven million illegal immigrants reside in the United States today who don’t contribute in any way to the federal tax base in the USA. Those who make too much money on Social Security may only receive a measly $10 monthly. An illegal alien, however, is given an average of close to $135 a month with hardly any questions being asked.

Some stamp recipients are not actually totally impoverished. As a part of welfare reform, the Clinton presidency let states ease many policies regarding who could be entitled. Today, households which are living a little above the poverty line or that even have a little savings may benefit. Twenty years ago they would have been left out.

EBT cardsFood stamp fraud is a major problem in the present system. In some cases people trade their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards for cash since they only call for a PIN without any ID requirement. They even make use of tools like Facebook, Craigslist and Twitter to broadcast their sale. There have been instances in which the benefits were given out in the names of individuals who were behind bars or even dead for several months. A USDA official revealed that food stamp fraud currently totals $750 million yearly.

Businesses which were banned from allowing food stamps as a result of abuse, continue to accept them without legal consequences. This is where the real problem lies. The government is not capable of patrolling the growing number of incidents of abuse which are everywhere. They inform recipients about financial and jail time penalties for abuse which aren’t repeatedly and sufficiently enforced.

Program Promotion?

Immigration PriceWhy does the U.S. government provide a website that teaches immigrants the way to enroll in welfare services once they arrive in America? Since 2004, the USDA has even cooperated with the Mexican government in increasing the awareness of the food stamp system found in The United States. When individuals illegally or fraudulently sign up for the food stamp plan, it makes it even tougher for individuals who urgently must have the assistance to have a chance to get it.

The USDA has furnished a Spanish language leaflet to the Mexican Embassy in Washington that instructs Mexicans who have crossed the border how to receive food stamp benefits for their children without acknowledging are illegal  illegal  immigrants. In boldface type and underscored, the document informs immigrants who are unlawfully in America that, “You need not divulge information regarding your immigration status in seeking this benefit for your children”.

The USDA had even been wasting taxpayer money to run Spanish speaking television commercials that persuade illegal immigrants to start receiving government financed food stamps. These commercials describe the program and furnish a phone number to sign up with. The Mexican Consul in Santa Ana, CA even starred in some of the ads. The Consul reassured immigrants that obtaining food stamps “won’t affect your immigration status”.

The USDA started promoting food stamps with paid radio ads in 2004 under President Bush. As a result, food stamp participation elevated by 63 percent shortly thereafter. Today they are encouraging the elderly to promote food stamps by recommending that they arrange food stamp parties and games. A pamphlet encouraging these kinds of events says, “Host social events where people mix and mingle” and “Make it fun by having activities, games, food, and entertainment, and provide information about SNAP”.

Whenever more illegal immigrants start on food stamps, JP Morgan rakes in extra income. They have made more than $560 million processing EBT cards since they were first made available. They only take care of the transactions of 26 states, though. Some other banks are making a profit from this in other states as well. Every month, this bank makes between $.31 and $2.30 for each person that is on food stamps (not including ATM fees).

As a result of this, JP Morgan holds a vested interest in having poverty grow and the number of people on food stamps escalate. Their political donations to members of the House and Senate agricultural committees, who have the legislative responsibility for the program, has at least tripled from 2002 to 2010.

The US Government is Working With the Mexican Government to Promote Food Stamps

This system is actually nothing more than a nationwide handout program to bribe voters into voting for big government. Those political parties that promise the most handouts have a tendency to win elections today. Our country is precariously close to $17 trillion in debt and yet very few of our politicians even appear to care. Those politicians who do not take their jobs seriously enough and work hard enough to develop significant and beneficial long-lasting economic improvements should be tossed out of office.

These kinds of programs have broadened into unethical systems of lasting dependency which spoil individual dignity and train voters to subsist like helpless victims rather than capable human beings. Assisting your fellow man in need of assistance by reaching into one’s own pocket is morally right and praiseworthy. Doing the same by going into someone else’s pocket is immoral and even criminally wrong.

Even a number of 2nd and 3rd generation, legalized, Mexican-Americans find this kind of abusive, parasitic behavior repulsive. This kind of abuse of the system could possibly be avoided if the benefits were handed out on a more personal scale. Churches or small community organizations should be the means of such charity rather than huge government organizations.

Can you imagine what would happen if some day all of the government benefit cards stopped working? With our country rapidly going further and further into debt, this could certainly occur if our debts were called in some day. We are already becoming a poverty-stricken nation. We just can’t afford to keep feeding increasing millions of illegal immigrants as well. This system of government handouts needs to be changed today before matters get a lot worse.
